William H. Schlesinger is the James B. Duke Professor of Biogeochemistry and dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Science at Duke University. He is outgoing president of the Ecological Society of America and is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A widely cited researcher on carbon sequestration, air quality and soils, he has testified before U.S. House and Senate Committees on a variety of environmental issues, including global climate change and desert ecosystem conservation.

Why not relax EPA pollution standards to help lower gas prices? Reporters need to cover the long-term consequences of such an action, not just its short-term savings.
