Kevin Carlsmith is an assistant professor of psychology at Colgate University. His research examines theories of morality and justice in a social psychological context. He studies how ordinary people perceive social transgressions and their intuitions about the proper consequences for these transgressions.

It's not a good way to get information, so why did Bush administration officials endorse torture? A social psychologist's experiment offers evidence that those who endorse torture do so out of a desire for retribution, rather than because they think it will be useful.
