Shaul Bakhash, Clarence Robinson Professor of History at George Mason University, is a specialist on the history of modern Iran and a member of the Middle East Journal’s Advisory Board. Before joining the George Mason University faculty, he taught at Princeton University. He is the author of Reign of the Ayatollahs: Iran and the Islamic Revolution, Iran: Monarchy, Bureaucracy and Reform under the Qajars, 1858-1896, and other publications. His essays have appeared in scholarly books and various journals, including Foreign Policy, Journal of Democracy, American Historical Review, Asian and African Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and the Middle East Journal. He writes for the New York Review of Books, and his Op-Ed pieces have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post and other leading American newspapers.

Until 1979, he worked as a journalist in Iran with the Kayhan Group of newspapers and served, at various times, as correspondent for the Times of London, the Financial Times, and the Economist. He received his BA and MA from Harvard University and his doctorate from Oxford University.
